Seaholme family on better wicket, thanks to Steve Waugh

A Seaholme mother whose adult daughter has a rare brain disorder has received support from the Steve Waugh Foundation Australia.

The foundation, started by one of cricket’s legendary captains, provides grants for young people with rare diseases.

Maree Kinniburgh’s 23-year-old daughter Abbie is believed to be the only person in Australia born without a pituitary gland
and with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC).

The corpus callosum is a structure in the middle of the brain which transfers information between the two hemispheres, and its malformation causes problems with social interaction, language development, sleep, reading, writing and memory.

Abbie’s annual medication bill costs several thousand dollars. Ms Kinniburgh said the foundation’s support would help for treatment and physiotherapy.

The pair are foundation committee members of support group Australian Disorders of the Corpus Callosum.
