WHAT’S ON: Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay

FEAST OF MUSIC

A contemporary fusion of Middle Eastern music, song and dance will light up Yarraville this Saturday night. Dance maestro Josie Palermo and vocalist Beulah Joseph will team up with Jadida musicians to evoke the atmosphere of the bazaars of the Middle East. Catch their energetic performance at Kindred Studios.

■ Join their dance workshop (7pm, class plus show $20) or the show only (8.30pm, $10).

PULLING STRINGS

Local performer Sarah Busuttil is encouraging children to get involved in music at the launch this Sunday of Strings West – a music school dedicated to educate, encourage and inspire young musicians in the west. Known for her flamboyant performances with the Woohoo Revue and the Footscray Gypsy Orchestra, “Gypsy Sarah” has teamed up with local string teachers Silas Palmer (viola) and Laura Sheridan (cello) to launch Strings West, which holds its first public performance at the Newport Lakes bush dance, 4-7pm this Sunday.

SOUND FOOTING

Installation and performance artist Dale Gorfinkel and dancer Peter Fraser invite audiences to tune into the wonderful friendship of sound and movement at the Footscray Community Arts Centre this weekend. Featuring foot-pump-powered modified trumpets, spinning styrofoam sculptures, noise-making clothes and automated percussion, Sounds Like Movement is a curious and playful audience adventure.

Shows are at 6pm, Friday, and 5.30pm on Saturday at the Basement Theatre; tickets are $15/$10.
