Living books ready to share stories in Footscray

A new chapter in Maribyrnong’s colourful history begins this Sunday with the launch of the city’s first “human library”.

The Cultural Diversity Week event at the Maidstone Harmony Feast involves refugees and newly arrived migrants from around the world sharing their stories with anyone who wishes to “borrow” them for a 20-minute conversation.

The Head On Human Library will feature “living books” from Vietnam, India, Ethiopia, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Mozambique talking about their journey to Australia as well as the challenges and triumphs of being a part of our community.

Project co-ordinator Monique Camilleri said the idea was to bring people together for discussions they might otherwise never have.

Auspiced by the West Footscray Neighbourhood House, the project aims to break down negative perceptions, myths and judgements about refugees and migrants.

To “borrow” living books, visit the free Maidstone Harmony Feast at 21 Yardley Street, Maidstone, noon-3pm this Sunday.

A video documentation of the “living books” will be released after the event on YouTube and via all Maribyrnong libraries.
