Industries back Hobsons Bay schools on jobs

Two Hobsons Bay schools have signed a memorandum of understanding with Mobil and Transfield Services to expose students to job opportunities in the oil and gas industries.

Employees from the two companies will directly interact with students of Bayside College and Williamstown High School under the Young Ambassadors for Industry program.

Bayside College this month officially opened its overhauled $9.6 million Paisley campus at Newport, which has new science labs, mathematics hubs, a technical training centre offering VET courses in automotive and building and construction, and a year 12 study area with access to careers advisers.

Mobil’s Altona refinery manager, Andrew Warrell, said while the company had a long history of supporting local schools – particularly in maths and science education – the memorandum took industry support for students to a new level.

“By directly involving the people of Altona refinery in sharing their experience and knowledge, I hope we can really make a difference in the lives of local students at a time when they are making important decisions about their study and career options,” Mr Warrell said.

Transfield Services said the program would help students enter the workforce.
