Altona East Phoenix has made it two wins from two matches to start the season in men’s state league 1 north-west thanks to a 1-0 win against defending champion Moreland City at Paisley Reserve on Saturday.
Phoenix coach Terry Antoniadis said his team followed instructions to restrict City’s attacking game.
“I went and watched them in round one and knew it would be a tough game,” he said.
“We played well and were very disciplined when we didn’t have the ball.
“For us to keep a clean sheet is good; they had only three or four chances for the whole game.
“We were fortunate to get a goal late.”
The win puts Phoenix on top of the ladder. This weekend, it takes on arch-rival and neighbour Altona Magic, which lost 4-2 to Keilor Park on Saturday.
“It’s another tough game and we’ve had a fantastic relationship with them for a long time,” Antoniadis said.
“The fact we’re next door to each other might add a little extra spice.”
In state league 2 north-west, Yarraville lost to Corio 2-0.
In state league 3 north-west, Williamstown lost to Geelong Rangers 2-0 and North City Wolves defeated Altona City 2-1.
In state league 4 west, Maribyrnong Greens, Altona North and Laverton City all lost, while Melbourne City won.
