Netball

City West Falcons overcame a slow start against DC North East Blaze to continue their unbeaten run in the Victorian Netball League with a 46-38 win. The Falcons trailed at the first break but got themselves in the game to be level at half-time; they then pulled away to gain the points. Kathleen Knott scored 28 goals for the Falcons. VU Western Lightning lost to Peninsula Waves 58-38. The Waves outscored the Lightning in every quarter. Kate Thompson scored 19 goals for the Lightning. The Falcons remain on top of the ladder and the Lightning fall to ninth.

HOCKEY

Footscray has won a tough contest against Camberwell in Hockey Victoria women’s premier league. A goal to Nicola Hancock midway through the first half put Footscray ahead at half-time. Scores were unchanged in the second half, giving the Bulldogs their third win of the season to sit second on the ladder. The Footscray men went down to Camberwell 4-0. Both Altona premier sides won, the women 2-1 against Toorak East Malvern and the men 3-2 against Southern United.

FOOTBALL

Altona’s Lee Spiteri and Spotswood’s Jason Cloke have been selected in the Victoria Metro senior (community leagues) preliminary squad ahead of the AFL Victoria Community Cup. The Metro squad plays a representative side from Victoria Country on Saturday, July 12.

CYCLING

Footscray Cycling Club members were out in force on Anzac Day to compete for the 54th Bob Robson Memorial at the Williamstown High School course. James Love won the main race after being part of an early breakaway with Nathan Page, Miles DaCosta and Jason Costin. Love, Page and DaCosta were able to keep the pace up and lapped the main field with about 10 minutes to go. In the sprint, Love edged out Page. Antonio Marino won the support race and Drew Macdonald won in C-grade.
