THE DAY THE BRIDGE COLLAPSED

Previously undisplayed photographs of the West Gate Bridge collapse will be on display this weekend at a one-day exhibition to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the tragedy. Thirty-five construction workers died in the collapse on October 15, 1970. The free exhibition is part of Courts Open Day, 10am-3pm, this Saturday at the William Cooper Justice Centre, 223 William Street, Melbourne.

WINTER GARDENING

Find out how to prepare delicious winter greens and keep your garden thriving with the help of a free gardening workshop at the Maidstone Community Centre this Sunday. The workshop is part of the My Smart Garden program, focusing on a range of sustainability and gardening topics. The workshop will focus on planning cool weather planting and encourage community members to improve self-sufficiency and reduce their environmental impact.

WRITERS REVEAL SECRETS

Yarraville poet and winner of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript 2013, Maxine Beneba Clarke, will join screenwriter and author Graeme Simsion in conversation with Michael Kitson at Rotunda in the West this Thursday. BLUES MEETS JAZZ

FITNESS FOR ALL

Free community Fit Clubs are in Wyndham and Williamstown for all ages and abilities. Sessions are run by volunteers who help people improve well-being with exercise and nutrition. DRIVING MADE SAFER

A senior drivers’ expo will be held in Altona on June 14. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council will provide information about road law, health and the effect of medicines on driving. Participants can get a free and confidential driving assessment in their own car, and a free, confidential inspection of their car’s safety and roadworthiness. Free lunch is provided.
