Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s “significant contribution to education” has been recognised with an honorary doctorate by Victoria University.
Ms Gillard received the degree as part of the university’s graduation ceremonies last week.
VU chancellor George Pappas said Ms Gillard was honoured for championing reforms to improve educational outcomes for all Australians.
“On becoming Australia’s 27th prime minister, she provided strong leadership and introduced significant social initiatives including sweeping changes to the delivery of disability care,” he said.
Mr Pappas said the former Lalor MP exemplified the university’s mission to provide opportunities for people of diverse backgrounds to further their education.
Ms Gillard spoke to the graduating students after receiving her award. “The most powerful thing in our world is the power of education. It transforms lives and communities and nations, and eventually the whole world.”
VU also awarded an honorary degree to Kirsty Sword Gusmao in recognition of her work championing education in improving the lives of women and children in Timor-Leste.
