The Footscray Cycling Club’s winter road season continued with a tough day’s racing at Balliang in the Brisbane Ranges on Saturday.
Riders contested the 80-kilometre course in dry, temperate and windy conditions.
With a strong northerly wind blowing, most thought the A-grade riders would break up, but the bunch was quite civilized for the first three quarters of the race.
Eventual winner Miles DaCosta said the field stayed bunched until the turn for home.
“Then I took off,” he said. “Jason Costin bridged across to me and we pulled some hard turns to build a lead … it wasn’t until we got to the sprint that I got him by half a wheel.”
DaCosta took a narrow win from Costin, with Andrew Bonello in third after just holding off Josh Zammit.
In B grade, Peter Robertson used his considerable strength to take a strong win. Alistair Tubb won the C grade and Dennis Hobbs the D-grade race.
