Hobsons Bay youth parliament team’s transport plans on track

Hobsons Bay’s youth parliament team is working on a bill that will call for 24-hour public transport in Melbourne.

The team of six will join more than 120 people aged 16 to 25 to debate legislation as part of the YMCA’s annual Victorian youth parliament from June 30 to July 3.

Team member Oussama Abou-Zeid said the bill would argue the benefits for shift workers as well as late-night revellers.

“We took a deeper approach; we’d actually consider the shift workers. All those people who work late-night shifts, such as nurses, they’ll also be able to use this new mode of transport,’’ he said. “The last train leaves the city around 12.30 or 1am, so you basically have to call it a night pretty early.”

Last year the team introduced a bill for free tertiary education. Mr Abou-Zaid said while the youth parliament was apolitical, the latest federal budget “didn’t do that bill any good”.

Bills passed by the youth parliament are presented to the state government for further consideration. Other team members are Ashleigh Davey, Omar Aldabel, Irena Vecris, Kate Wall and Alexandra Paleologoudias.
