Footscray artists will be part of the action when an all-day block party takes over Fitzroy Town Hall on Sunday, June 15. Napier Street will close for the Emerge Main Event, featuring three stages of non-stop world music and a vibrant cultural marketplace. Footscray resident Fipe Keanu will present a Polynesian dance workshop, while Footscray locals will provide gospel and hip-hop sounds through young Burundian and Congolese musicians as part of the Genesis Project (pictured).

Benefit gig

A fund-raiser gig will be held at Footscray’s Reverence Hotel on the Sunday afternoon of June 8 for the children of Fiona Warzywoda, who was killed in April as she was leaving her lawyer’s office in Sunshine. Oi ENUF! will feature Joelistics, Ezekial Ox, Muscle Mary, Ruby Soho and many more.

Cult classics

Maribyrnong council’s Cult Classics in the Church series starts at 7.30pm on Friday, June 6, with The Blues Brothers. Four weeks of free screenings will be at the Bluestone Church Arts Space,
Hyde Street, Footscray. Arrive early to secure a spot. Limited food and
beverages available. Prizes for best dressed patrons.

Meet the makers

Meet the film-makers behind The Man From Coxs River, an award-winning Australian documentary by Russell Kilbey and Amy Scully. The film screening will be followed by a filmmaker Q&A.

Inspired art

An exhibition titled I did not choose to be a refugee will be launched from 7pm on Friday, June 13, at Altona’s Joel Gallery. The works by award-winning Eritrean artist Michael Adonai were spurred by the sinking of an asylum-seeker boat off the coast of Italy. The exhibition runs until June 27.
