Barat Ali Batoor: Exhibition captures heart of refugee issue

Two-time Walkley winning photographer Barat Ali Batoor, an Afghan asylum seeker who took pictures as his boat sunk, is exhibiting in Footscray.

Batoor’s exhibition focuses on Melbourne’s Hazara community. Batoor, whose photos have been published in The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, said he sought to demonstrate that refugees and asylum seekers were not just numbers reported by governments and the media.

He said his photos showed real individuals, families and communities who held the same fears, hopes and aspirations as other Australians.

The free exhibition is at Roslyn Smorgon Gallery, 45 Moreland Road, from June 12-29. Open 9.30am-5pm Monday to Friday and 10am-4pm on weekends.
