Victorian Greens Senator-elect Janet Rice is putting a new spin on the political cycle.
The former Footscray mayor, who becomes a federal senator on July 1, will ride her bike from Melbourne to Canberra to take up her new role.
Ms Rice said she expected a few dozen people to join her on the first day, travelling from Footscray to Bacchus Marsh, but only a handful to join her for the whole journey through rural and regional Victoria.
“My bike’s my main form of transport,” she said. “When I was on council, people knew me as the councillor who rode a bike and I certainly intend to keep riding as a senator.”
Ms Rice will depart from Footscray’s Happy River Cafe at 10am on Sunday, June 15.
