Brooklyn: Forest of helping hands for Federation Trail path

Residents will this month join agencies and 14 Brooklyn businesses to plant 500 native trees and shrubs along the Federation Trail bike and pedestrian path in Brooklyn.

The planting is part of the Department of Primary Industries’ 2 Million Trees plan.,

Brooklyn Residents Action Group (BRAG) president Bert Boere said as part of the project site filling, mulching, path building and grass seeding have been completed.

“It’s proposed to plant 2400 indigenous trees and shrubs along the section of the Federation Trail between Geelong Road and Kororoit Creek, Brooklyn,” he said. “This section of trail will complement the section between Geelong Road and Millers Road, Brooklyn, planted by the Brooklyn community last year.”

Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek president and BRAG special projects manager Geoff Mitchelmore said it was “extremely gratifying” to see Brooklyn industries and local and state agencies taking part in the community project.

The planting starts 10am on June 29, with interested residents invited to meet at the entry to the Transpacific tip (Melway map 40 G9).

There will be an official celebration at noon with a free barbecue catered by Altona Lions, Cedar Meats and Bakers Delight.

Saplings will be planted by Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek, Melbourne Water, VicRoads, Brimbank council, the Environment Protection Authority, Toyota and Corrections Victoria.

Mr Boere said Brooklyn businesses which would help with the planting included Transpacific, Delta Demolitions, Sunshine Groupe, Australian Tallow, Cedar Meats, Fulton Hogan, Sims Metals, Veolia, APA Group, City Circle, JBS Australia and Marks Henderson.
