Altona, Altona Meadows women step up for Peter Mac

Four women from Altona and Altona Meadows are almost halfway towards a $10,000 target as they seek to help the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre tackle women’s cancers.

The women are preparing to take part in Peter Mac’s next 60-kilometre charity walk, dubbed the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers.

Rach Scoble, Tina Gladigau, Julia Page and Angela Gatt will walk a route that has yet to be revealed from February 28 to March 1 next year.

Three of the friends completed the previous charity walk earlier this year, raising more than $8000. None of the team members has been personally affected by cancer, saying their commitment was based on a desire to support women everywhere.

“We chose something that was a good physical challenge,” Ms Scoble said. “It’s an amazing event to be part of.”

Having already raised $4000 towards next year’s total, the team hopes to “top up its account” with a family fun fair at Altona Sports Club from 1-5pm on July 20.

The fund-raiser will include face-painting, a jumping castle, balloonist, fire truck and police car, and a visit by Melbourne Aces baseball club’s mascot, Maverick.

Ms Scoble said many people had donated services for the event. “We’re very humbled by how generous people are. Everybody’s just been so very kind, which makes what we’re doing a whole lot easier.”

Family tickets are $10. To book, phone 0403 476 317 or 0407 518 973.
