Healthier homes and lives

A better kind of asphalt

Maribyrnong council is testing a more sustainable asphalt in its resurfacing of Roberts Street, West Footscray, between Sunshine Road and Clarendon Parade. The asphalt contains recycled steel ‘slag’, a by-product of steel manufacturing. It costs no more than regular asphalt but is more durable and could prevent tonnes of waste material ending up in landfill.

NAIDOC Week celebrations

A free children’s indigenous music show and flag-raising ceremony will be among the events held in Maribyrnong as part of NAIDOC Week which continues until Sunday. Held across Australia each July, NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The flag-raising ceremony will be held tomorrow (July 10) at Maribyrnong council offices from 10.30am. The music show, featuring Jessie Lloyd from Songlines Aboriginal Music, is at West Footscray library, 539 Barkly Street, on July 17 from 10.30am. 9688 0290 or email sue.barnard@maribyrnong.vic.gov.au
