Cooking up some serious fun-ds

Katrina Ellis, of Melissa Cakes, and Altona Community Bank’s Sarah Stapleton and Daniela Guertler are inviting people to a fund-raiser for the Starlight Children’s Foundation on Friday. Altona, Laverton and Point Cook Community Bank branches will host an evening of food and entertainment to raise money for seriously ill children. The event, from 6.30-10.30pm at Melissa Cakes, will feature a silent auction.

Unleash your inner muso

Footscray Community Arts Centre will host songwriting workshops for young people conducted by experienced Melbourne-based musician, producer and tutor Robin Waters. Bring your own instrument or use one of the centre’s and join the group in recording a demo in the sound studio. The workshops will be held across six Wednesdays, 4-6pm, from August 6. Cost $145.

Better health

Psychologist Therese Sheedy will present a lecture at the Maribyrnong Aquatics Centre on July 23 from 7.30-9pm on well-being and how it relates to preventing suicide. Hosted by the Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria, the talk will provide a holistic view of mental health, hope, optimism and how we can keep ourselves well. Cost $22. Bookings essential.

SingFest 2014

Fourteen community choirs will sing at Williamstown Town Hall on Sunday, July 20, from 11.30am-4.30pm. Tickets cost $12/$10 and will be available at the door.

Maribyrnong council’s FReeZA committee is bringing another all-ages punk rock spectacular to Footscray. The Rise of Brotality tour, featuring I Killed The Prom Queen, The Ghost Inside and In Hearts Wake, will be staged at Phoenix Youth Centre on September 20.
