Altona has claimed a 3-1 win over Southern United in Hockey Victoria men’s premier league after a dominant performance from Commonwealth Games-bound midfielder Matthew Guest. Guest, who will represent Canada at Glasgow 2014, fired in a goal and had a profound influence in the heart of the field.

Lacrosse

James Lawerson (Footscray) and Ben Newman (Williamstown) played key roles in Australia’s thrilling 14-13 triple-overtime win against Japan in its opening match at the world lacrosse championships in Colorado. Lawerson scored two goals and had an assist, while Newman fired in two goals. The Sharks came back to earth in the second group game with a 16-7 loss to host nation the US.

TAC Cup football

Jayden Laverde continued his purple patch of form with three goals for the Western Jets on his return to the TAC Cup. But the Jets copped their third successive loss, this time by 16 points to the Murray Bushrangers on the road at Norm Minns Oval on Sunday.

Baseball

Melbourne Aces have gone global to sign a new manager. Tommy Thompson, manager of the Winston Salem Dash in the Chicago White Sox minor league system, has signed for the 2014-15 ABL season. The Aces open their season at Altona against the Brisbane Bandits on November 7.
