It’s the retro comeback that has music lovers in a spin.
With iPods and digital technology dominating the modern landscape, it’s easy to forget a time when albums had to be turned over, and scratches and interference on a track were signs of character rather than imperfections.
Whether you remember them from the first time around or you’re a recent convert, there’s no denying vinyl is back. Every Tuesday night, in a small Yarraville bar, people of all ages are coming together to share their common bond.
In response to the vinyl revival, local musician and DJ Leif van den Dungen has launched BYO Vinyl Nights. Record-lovers are being encouraged to bring along their favourites and have them added to the playlist or even try their hand on the turntables.
Mr van den Dungen, who was born in the late 1970s and missed out on vinyl’s heyday, said there was a renewed appreciation for the format.
“My nights provide a real hands-on experience where people not only have their music played, but I’ll teach them how to DJ and they can have a go on the turntables and mixer.’’
He said the enduring appeal of vinyl was simple. “You get a warmer, richer tone, but there’s obviously the nostalgic factor for some older people. There’s also the extras that come with vinyl records, such as the artwork on the cover and the liner notes, which you just don’t get with downloaded music.’’
BYO Vinyl Night is on Tuesdays from 7.30-11pm at Yarra Lounge, 7 Ballarat Street, Yarraville (opposite the Sun Theatre).
