A group of Yarraville residents fear a block of 14 two- to four-storey townhouses and apartments will destroy the character of their neighbourhood and set a precedent for future residential developments.
A planning application for the development at 66 Wilson Street will go before Maribyrnong councillors on August 26.
Resident Sally-Ann Watt said she was concerned about potential overshadowing from the townhouses.
She also said the plans included limited off-street parking for visitors.
“We understand there needs to be development, but it has to be appropriate, in keeping with the surrounding area, and it shouldn’t impact the quality of life of other residents,” Ms Watt said.
“We’re in a quiet little cul-de-sac … we think this development is pushing the boundaries and don’t want developments of this scale to become the norm.’’
Under the council’s planning requirements, developments must include one car space for each one or two-bedroom dwelling and two spaces for every dwelling of three bedrooms or more. One visitor parking space must be allocated for every five dwellings.
A spokeswoman for developers Marwood Construction said 25 on-site car spaces would be provided for residents.
“We have submitted an application that provides a comprehensive analysis of the proposal against the requirements of the Maribyrnong planning scheme,” she said.
“The council will make a judgment as to whether they consider the proposal to be an overdevelopment.”
