Hobsons Bay youth make a case for space

Hobsons Bay children have voiced their need for play space while adolescents and young adults say they are worried about mental health issues, drugs, job opportunities and places to socialise.

Hobsons Bay council has used the feedback from people aged 25 and under to draft its children and young people’s plan for 2014-18. The plan is now open to community feedback.

Thirty one per cent (26,481) of Hobsons Bay’s population is 25 or under, with the number forecast to increase by 3377 by 2021.

People aged 19 to 25 felt there was a lack of nightlife and were worried about their job prospects.

“Approximately 14 per cent of 20- to 24-year-olds in Hobsons Bay are disengaged from paid work or education,” the plan states. “This is higher than the metropolitan Melbourne average and ranks Hobsons Bay fourth out of the 31 local government areas.”

Three of the main issues identified by young people consulted for the plan were the need for more safe bike paths, better public transport and improved safety in and around train stations.

Children aged up to four told the council they liked outdoor activities and places where they could play. Those aged five to 11 said they liked open space and recreational opportunities, and wanted more toilets, drinking fountains and play equipment.

Youth aged 12-18 said their key concerns were mental health issues, alcohol and drugs, employment opportunities and affordable housing.
