Hobsons Bay: Young singers ready to raise voices

More than 320 children will take part in the ninth annual Hobsons Voice primary school concert at Williamstown Town Hall this Sunday.

This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Celebrate!’, marking 20 years of the City of Hobsons Bay.

Nine primary schools are taking part, working under the musical direction of Doug Heywood.

The opera singer, music teacher and conductor was last year’s Hobsons Bay citizen of the year for his contributions to music, artistic and cultural life.

Mr Heywood has been involved in Channel Nine’s Carols by Candlelight for more than 25 years and has co-ordinated the annual Handel’s Messiah concert in Williamstown for 17 years.

Mr Heywood described his role with the city’s youngest singers as “a buzz”.

Songs on the program include Under Southern Skies, Mamma Mia by Abba, a Beatles medley and Birdy’s People Help The People.

Choirs involved in the concert hail from Altona, Altona North, Newport Gardens, Newport Lakes, Seaholme, St Marys, Queen of Peace, Williamstown and Williamstown North primary schools.

The free event, part of the council’s Arts At Your Doorstep program, starts at 2pm.
