Maribyrnong’s Wheels in the West offers keys to driving success

Getting a driver’s licence is an important milestone in a young person’s life.

But for those who don’t have access to a car or a qualified driver to help them gain experience behind the wheel, it’s a dream that can often be out of reach.

Maribyrnong council’s Wheels in the West program is helping young learner drivers, including many newly arrived migrants, to complete the 120 hours of driving practice they need by matching them with an experienced driving guide.

The council is looking for more volunteer mentors. Volunteers must have a current Victorian driver’s licence and a good driving record. They must also commit to a minimum of 90 minutes a week and undergo police checks. Training, a program vehicle and insurance are provided.
