A mosaic flower created by the Hobsons Bay community under the guidance of artist Julee Latimer is bringing joy to senior citizens in Altona Meadows.
Latimer invited people to free, open-studio sessions at her Altona home as part of this year’s Art in Public Places program.
About 30 people had a hand in creating the mosaic, the youngest aged just four and the oldest in her eighties.
Latimer decided to give the flower to a local nursing home after seeing a story about the elderly residents raising funds to do something about their bare courtyard garden.
“I chose to donate the flower to St George’s residential home in Altona Meadows after seeing an article in Star Weekly about one of their residents.
Millie is in her late 90s and tends one of the courtyard gardens at the home.
“I thought the flower would be a great addition to their brick walls,” Latimer said.
“I have met Millie a number of times since and she, along with staff and other residents at the home, are thrilled with the community art.”
