Heavenly set of pipes at Williamstown

Williamstown Uniting Church is inviting the community to experience renditions of classical masters played on its 120-year-old pipe organ.

International organist Rohit Sailas will play the church’s state-significant 1893 Fincham and Hobday organ as part of Ranks of Heaven.

The two-manual organ of 20 stops was built especially for the church at a cost of 670 pounds. Its only alteration has been a mixture stop added in the 1980s.

Sailas, originally from Bangalore, will perform works by Bach, Handel, Dvorak and other masters.

A founding member of gospel rock band Sailas and The Cantonment Jazz Band, Sailas said a high point of his career was conducting and accompanying Mozart’s Requiem Mass with a 50-voice choir and chamber orchestra.

The free concert is at the church in Electra Street, Williamstown, from 5.15pm on September 6.
