The deaths of 30 little penguins which washed up at Altona beach last Wednesday has wildlife experts baffled. There is speculation they may have been caught in a commercial fishing net before being pulled out and dumped in the ocean. Only one penguin had been microchipped, which showed it was last seen in St Kilda eight years ago. Earthcare St Kilda penguin team spokeswoman Zoe Hogg said the animals looked to be in good condition. The bodies of five penguins were taken to La Trobe University on Wednesday afternoon. ■ Full story: page 10
