It’s been a busy 12 months for Jayden Christie. Long known as one of the western suburb’s best young lawn bowlers, the 15-year-old has been travelling to all parts of the state and country, as well as overseas, to showcase his talents.
Christie’s journey started with a gold medal in the pairs and a silver medal in the fours while competing for Victoria in the national championships in Perth last year. His outstanding form led to him being picked to represent Victoria in the trans-Tasman challenge against New Zealand.
In what was his first overseas experience, there were no signs of nerves as Christie picked up gold in the singles and pairs. He loved the international outing.
“It was a really good experience,” he said. “All the hospitality was nice when we got there. It was great competition.”
The Williamstown High School student’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed. Christie was recently selected in the Victorian under-18 gold squad despite being three years younger than the age cut-off. The squad is for elite junior bowlers from around the state. He has also been named in the under-25 national training squad.
The latest results have his home club, Werribee, buzzing. Bees committee member Reg Hassett said Christie’s achievements were no surprise to those who saw his talent from a young age. The Seabrook resident first played at Werribee when he was seven years old.
“I think if he maintains his current approach he could go anywhere,” Hassett said.
“Young Jayden is level-headed and is a great club member, and I think he has great talent.
“We are so proud to have him representing us when he is representing Victoria and playing in New Zealand.”
Despite what has already been a busy schedule, there are no plans to slow down for Christie, who has his eye on defending his pairs gold medal at the forthcoming national titles. The tournament will take place in Darwin in late September.
For his outstanding sports achievements, Christie has been named as a monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with
Star Weekly. Christie will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Cricket Club and other prizes.
The Don Deeble Rising Star award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and national level.
