Swingman Fletcher Roberts kicked a miraculous goal after the final siren to give Footscray a sensational three-point win over Richmond at Punt Road in the VFL on Sunday.
Roberts’ goal secured the Bulldogs a home qualifying final at the Whitten Oval against local rivals Williamstown, who they shared an alignment with less than 12 months ago.
The Bulldogs trailed at every change before storming to victory with six goals to three in the last term.
There were two parts to Roberts’ late-game heroics.
Firstly, he took a sky-scraping pack mark from a Bradley Helbig kick-out, leaving the man on the mark well outside the 50-metre arc.
The siren sounded as Roberts looked inside 50 to find a teammate to relay the ball to, leaving him with the only option of a set shot from 60 out.
Roberts struck the ball sweetly off the boot.
It just drifted over the pack congregated on the goal line and in for one of the great goals.
The Bulldogs locked up a second-spot finish as a result.
It promises to be a cracking week- one finals match-up between the local outfits, because Williamstown has been another form side since the middle of the season.
The Seagulls made it eight wins on the trot with a 55-point dismantling of the Sandringham Zebras at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday.
Sean Tighe and Kane Lambert continued their stellar form for Williamstown.
Mitch Banner led the Gulls with three goals, while Lambert, Jack Walker, Anthony Anastasio and Dylan Conway kicked two apiece.
