Robbery, donation link ruled out

A cash donation left at Legacy’s Melbourne office was so generous police thought it may have been linked to an armed robbery in Footscray on July 16. The $33,000 donation was made anonymously a day after a robbery at a Byron Street jewellery store, with a note that read: “Thank you for your help over the years with my family.” Police believe a bag containing jewellery and about $70,000 of cash was dumped in a nearby street after the robbery and has not been recovered. They only ruled out a link between the money and the donation after the donor came forward. Meanwhile, a 37-year-old Ardeer woman has been charged with armed robbery, intentionally causing injury, theft and drug-related offences.

Thinking out of the box

The humble traffic signal box has been given a makeover at locations across Braybrook as part of Maribyrnong council’s Beautifying Braybrook project. Artist Julie Stevens and students from Caroline Chisholm College and Phoenix Youth Centre are decorating eight signal boxes with vinyl artwork. The project was funded through a $20,000 graffiti prevention grant from the Department of Justice.
