Hobsons Bay arty appetite for schoolchildren

This year’s 37th annual Hobsons Bay Art Show in Williamstown will help feed local schoolchildren.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Altona, the exhibition of paintings for sale showcases local artists and raises money for local and international projects.

Rotarian Therese McKenney said this year’s proceeds would help fund the Kickstart breakfast program at Laverton P-12 College, Altona P-9 College and Altona North Primary School for schoolchildren who may otherwise start the day without a meal.

Rotary runs the program in partnership with the Altona Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank.

Among the entrants will be last year’s winner, Newport’s Shirley Fisher.

“The painting I did last year was an oil, a large one,” she said. “It was actually a scene that’s not far from here and was painted early in the morning.” Fisher said she had yet to choose the scene she would depict this year.

Ms McKenney said this year’s show promised to be bigger than last year’s, when more than 530 paintings were hung.

The show will be at Seaworks on September 20 and 21, with a preview event on September 19 at 6.30pm. Tickets cost $45.
