The Tenants Union of Victoria and Justice Connect Homeless Law have backed the Coroner’s recommendations arising from the deaths of three Indian students in a house fire in Footscray in 2008. The investigation revealed up to five international students were living in a single bedroom. The Coroner recommended changes to the Residential Tenancies Act to require rented properties be fitted with hard-wired smoke alarms and require landlords or agents to certify there is a properly installed smoke alarm at the beginning of each lease and each year.
