Dog owners are being urged to keep their pets on leashes after numerous snake sightings across Hobsons Bay.
Altona Veterinary Clinic nurse Christine Gluhak said snakes had recently been seen at Truganina Park, Cherry Lake and Apex Park in Altona.
She said one client saw what is believed to have been a red belly black snake making its way across a busy bike and pedestrian path near the 100 Steps of Federation in Truganina Park.
“Generally, don’t let your dogs off the leash,” she said. “There were heaps of snakes last year so I’m guessing there’s going to be heaps this year as well.”
As reported by Star Weekly, in April a 12-year-old Williamstown boy spent 24 hours in intensive care after being bitten by a tiger snake on the Williamstown foreshore path.
Dr Karen Davies, of Point Cook’s Direct Vet Services, urged people to act quickly if they suspected a snake bite.
“One of my dogs was once bitten by a snake and died within eight minutes,” she said.
Common signs of snake bite include sudden vomiting, salivating, laboured breathing, difficulty walking, urinating blood, and collapsing.
