Footscray: John Gambardella’s Stranded in line for award

A love of all things maritime has netted Footscray artist John Gambardella recognition in a prestigious art prize.

Gambardella’s acrylic on canvas painting Stranded has been selected as a finalist in the annual ANL Maritime Art Prize.

The selection marks the eighth year running the self-taught artist has been chosen as a finalist for the prize.

Gambardella said his work was inspired by the life of Melbourne’s port and the work of the Mission to Seafarers Victoria, which provides on-shore facilities and support to seafarers.

The painter has kept busy this year on a number of other projects, including paintings selected for the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing (NSW), John Leslie Art Prize (Victoria), National Works on Paper Art Prize (Victoria), and the Chelsea International Contemporary Art Prize (New York).

The maritime art prize exhibition will run from October 2 to 31 at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria, 717 Flinders Street, Docklands.
