Gathering dust

An exhibition titled Dust, by Davia McMillan, is running at Altona’s Joel Gallery until October 12. The multi-media exhibition explores body ideals and images. Admission is free. The gallery, at 5 Sargood Street, Altona, is open from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday, and 11am-3pm at weekends.

Farmers market

Altona Primary School Farmers Market is on Saturday, October 18, from 9am-1pm. The market, at 109 Blyth Street, Altona, will have artisan breads, meat, preserves, fruit and vegetables, plants, pony rides and more.

Student journal

Victoria University will celebrate the launch of student-led creative arts journal Offset 14 from 6.30-8.30pm on Friday, October 17. Offset 14 contributors include writer Van Badham, musician Ma Petite and graphic designer Ted Takeshi Doré. The launch will be at Footscray’s Bluestone Church Arts Space, followed by a week-long exhibition of the artwork included in the journal.

Spring into fete

Kingsville Primary School will hold its annual spring fete from 10am-4pm on Saturday, October 18. Enjoy rides, an animal farm, face-painting and crazy hair, show bags, craft and food stalls, and a barbecue.

Storytelling to music

Personal stories and popular songs will feature at the next performance of Stereo Stories on Sunday, October 19, from 2pm, at the Newport Bowls Club. Presented by Williamstown writer Vin Maskell, Stereo Stories involves writers reading personal stories inspired by songs. Guests include Brian Nankervis from RockWiz.

Hearing checks

Free hearing checks will be provided at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre in Altona on October 28 and November 25. This service is provided by Hearservice, a division of the Victorian Deaf Society.

IT and aged care

Laverton Community Education Centre is holding classes in how to use iPads and computers for people over 40s and beginners’ lessons in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and the internet. The centre offers a dual certificate III in aged care and home and community care.

Spring into summer

With summer just around the corner, check out Maribyrnong council’s latest Active Maribyrnong program. Registrations are being accepted for Spring into Summer, a new series of free six-week programs. The series includes yoga, tai chi and Pilates.

Civic awards

Maribyrnong council is calling for nominations of people who have made a difference. The Maribyrnong Civic Awards celebrate individuals and organisations who have improved community life. Nominations close at 5pm on Friday, October 24.
