A dog has been destroyed after viciously attacking another dog in Yarraville Gardens on Sunday.
Bichon frisé Monty was set upon in front of dozens of horrified people and owner Verity’s nine-month-old baby.
The attacking dog, a staffy that had broken away from his lead, was fought off with a metal pole after an attack lasting up to 10 minutes.
Monty was rushed to Lort Smith Animal Hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a number of neck, stomach and mouth wounds.
The staffy’s owners surrendered the dog on Monday and he was euthanised.
His owners have agreed to cover Monty’s vet bills.
Verity said she was looking at food truck menus while walking Monty and her mother’s dog on leads and pushing her baby in a pram when she heard a man yell out: “Pick up your dog!”
“I just looked down and [Monty] was dragged away,” she told 3AW.
“They tried a lot of things to get the dog off but nothing worked. They used a metal bar to actually prise the jaws open … when they unclamped his jaw, he went Monty again on the stomach.”
The dog’s owners were initially accused of providing a false phone number and going into hiding.
But owner Lauren said she wasn’t able to be contacted because her fiancé was in hospital after he was bitten on a finger while trying to intervene.
“We didn’t escape, we did not go into hiding, we didn’t do any of that,” she told 3AW.
