■ One of the reasons I love sport is the people I meet. Whether through my radio career or being involved at all levels of football, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some incredible people, many of them my idols such as E.J. Whitten, John Schultz, Dennis Lillee, Viv Richards and Roy Higgins. While they’re icons of sport, it has also been my pleasure to meet the heroes of local sport, many of them unsung but incredibly important people who have made a significant contribution to society. The late Graeme ‘Creamy’ Davis is one of those people and in honour of him and other men who have passed before their time, a Walk for Men’s Health will be held on Sunday, November 16, with all proceeds going to the E.J. Whitten Foundation. Creamy gave an enormous amount of time to local sports clubs, especially Glenorden Football Club, and he was a ripping bloke and family man. His widow, Jo, is the creator of this walk and she has the support of local identities like Ted Whitten jnr, Chris Grant, Terry Wheeler, ‘Chops’ Rickman, Mick Martyn and Barry Michael, who are all participating on the day, as is MasterChef star George Calombaris. The eight-kilometre walk will start and finish at Williamstown Football Oval. Entry is $20 and you can register at and follow the prompts. Get behind this and let’s make it a huge annual event.
■ The smartest move I have seen in local sport comes with establishment of the Golf West program via the eight golf clubs of the west. Sanctuary Lakes, Medway, Eynesbury, Sunshine, Werribee Park, Kooringal, Melton Valley and Northern have combined to give their members the chance to play other courses in the west. I know leading golf writer and player George Begg has been pushing this for years, and he’s delighted it has finally happened.
■ The Bulldogs have taken a chance on Tom Boyd and I think it’s great. We have been critical of the inability to get deals done in the past, but this one is big. If it turns out he doesn’t play 150 games and makes a lot of money, then so be it, but it was time to take a risk and This one will be vindicated for supporters, members and everyone who is behind the red, white and blue. While I’m sad to see Griff and Coons go, I think it’s for the best for both parties. I’m actually more cranky still about losing Callan Ward than either of those two.
