West Footscray house fire: Man in hospital after saving his dog

A West Footscray man has been taken to hospital after rescuing his dog from a house fire overnight.

A couple in their 20s were fast asleep in their Stanhope Street when woken by a fire alarm at 12.30am.

The single-storey weatherboard dwelling was well ablaze when the first of several MFB crews arrived on the scene in just over five minutes.

Firefighters contained the fire to the lounge and kitchen areas, with the rest of the home suffering heat, smoke and water damage.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and burns to his shoulder after heading back into the fire to save his dog Diesel.

He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being transported to hospital for further treatment.

The fire took 23 firefighters 30 minutes to bring under control and caused about $150,000 damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
