The women’s open division 2 team led the way for Williamstown Athletics Club at Moonee Valley Athletics Track on Saturday. In the women’s 800m, Williamstown took the first three placings, with Rosamond Gilden victorious, closely followed by her sister, Eleni, and Brigette Mercaldi. The team, anchored by Karoline Curtis, had a runaway win in the medley relay. Curtis completed her second 800m for the day, before Rose McVicar charged home in the 3000m. Linda Close posted a personal best time in the 3000m walk. The leading performer among the under-18 women was again Celeste Mucci, who had a comfortable win in the 200m and also won the high jump. The open men’s division 2 wins went to Reily Kane in 800m and Daniel Barlow in the 3000m. Cosimo Mucci ran a strong race into the wind to win the under-18 200m. The Athletics Victoria Shield will now take a week’s break for the Victorian All Schools Championships at Albert Park.
Cricket
Gellibrand is still looking for its first win after four straight losses to start the Williamstown and District Cricket Association A-turf season. Its competitive 8-142 could not contain Melton South at Digman Reserve on Saturday. It passed the target four down with three overs to go. Matches for Williamstown Congs and Williamstown Colts were called off due to unplayable pitches.
