Newport: Developers eye Captain’s house in the Strand

An historic Newport house on one of the last large blocks in the Strand has attracted interest from developers.

Granton, as 74 The Strand was once known, is also called ‘the Captain’s house’, having purportedly been built in 1886 for shipmaster Robert West.

Compton Green sales executive John Luong said its current owners bought the Victorian house in 1995 for $843,500.

The asking price now is $4.75 million-plus, he said.

“The property comprises a land size of 1993 square metres with three separate accesses,” Mr Luong said.

“The Strand, Douglas Parade and Dowman Street provide car access and suggest the potential for future development, subject to council approval.”

Mr Luong said while the house itself had a heritage overlay to protect it from demolition, the rear of the property, the land component, could be developed.

“Your buyers at this kind of price don’t come along every day. It’s a specialised buyer for this type of property.”

He said there had been “good interest” in the property since it was put on the market.

Measuring 44 squares, the house has four bedrooms and a viewing room with vistas to the CBD and Port Phillip Bay.

Expressions of interest close November 20.
