Irish famine commemoration

Famine Rock Commemoration Day will be marked in Williamstown on November 23. A ceremony at the Standing Stone Famine Rock will pay tribute to the Great Famine and arrival of Irish famine orphan girls. The ceremony will be at the rock in Burgoyne Reserve, corner Stevedore Street and Strand, from 2.30pm. The Irish famine orphan girls sailed into Hobsons Bay from 1848-1850 on the Lady Kennaway, Pemberton, New Liverpool, Diadem, Derwent and Eliza Caroline.

Watercolour exhibition

Paintings by botanic art and watercolour students tutored by local artist Stefan Gevers will be exhibited at Williamstown library until November 28.

Footscray festival

Footscray City Primary School will hold the Footscray City Festival from 9am-3pm on November 29. Featuring live music, a jumping castle, food, craft and pre-loved treasure stalls, the festival is at 10 Hyde Street, Foostscray.

Footscray at war

Author and historian Dr John Lack will speak at Footscray Historical Society’s annual dinner and AGM at 8pm on November 19. It will be held at Footscray Town Hall, 61 Napier Street, Footscray.

Braybrook barbecue

A free barbecue will be held at Braybrook Community Hub on November 24 from 5-7pm. The hub is under construction but when complete will feature a library, sports pavilion, an early years centre, community centre and meeting rooms. Western Bulldogs star Doug Hawkins is a special guest at the barbecue. It will be held at Braybrook Temporary Village, Churchill Avenue, Braybrook.
