Police have arrested one of two men who escaped from Maribyrnong Detention Centre last week.
Detectives with the Fugitive task- force arrested Michael Dobson, 51, at 4pm on Monday without incident.
Police are still continuing the search for fellow escapee, Leonard Gjeka, a South Australian bikie gang associate, who escaped with Dobson from the detention centre on November 12.
Both men were due to be deported over concerns about their character.
Dobson is a New Zealand national described as having a fair complexion, medium build and blond hair.
Gjeka, 32, is an Albanian national 180cm tall, with solid build, brown eyes, black hair and olive complexion.
Police believe the two left the main building of the centre on Hampstead Road just after 1am and were met by two people. All four left through a gate on the centre’s south side.
Local police and the dog squad searched the area but were unable to find the escapees or their associates.
Detectives with the Fugitive task- force are continuing to investigate the incident.
In a statement, federal Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison, said one of the detainees had had his visa cancelled, and the other had had his application refused. Anyone with information on Gjeka’s whereabouts is urged to contact triple-0 immediately.
