Victoria University student takes a shot at giving back

Newport Victoria University student Philip Martins has produced a calendar of his travel photos to support children and young people living with cancer.

A seasoned traveller who has visited 55 countries, Mr Martins started his annual charity calendars in 2009 to help the Queensland flood victims.

That was followed by a calendar for Medecins Sans Frontieres in 2012, Project Dovetail in 2013, and a calendar last year to fund a Gold Coast holiday for a seriously ill girl and her family.

“For a long time I was thinking about how I could use my photography to support the community in some way,” Mr Martins said.

“So I thought, why not produce a calendar of my work, where I could share a selection of my best travel images with a broader audience in a printed medium and at the same time give back to the community in some way.

“I’m a big fan of Africa because of the amazing landscapes and the generosity of the people, many of whom face enormous poverty and adversity in their lives.”

Proceeds from this year’s calendar, featuring 13 prints from Morocco’s Sahara Desert, will go to national cancer charity, Redkite.

To date, Mr Martins has raised more than $16,000 from online calendar sales.

The A3-size calendars cost $40 and can be ordered online at www.philipmartinsphotography.com
