Williamstown: Punk music faces the flick

Punk’s not dead but its days could be numbered in Williamstown.

Seaworks will review future bookings for music events after a petition signed by 38 people from the Maritime on Nelson hotel complained about excessively loud music and the “downright disagreeable” music on the weekend of October 18.

Saturday’s Out on the Weekend festival featured Americana, country and blues music.

Sunday’s event, The Blurst of Times, had a line-up of alternative music, mainly garage, punk, indie and grunge bands.

The petition, tabled at last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting, called on the council to stop excessively amplified music coming from Seaworks.

“Not only was the music excessively loud, at times the genre was downright disagreeable,” the petition states.

“The noise and nuisance continued well into the night, both evenings, and finished 11pm.”

Seaworks chief executive Pauline Hobbs said the complaints were being taken very seriously as the venue didn’t want to jeopardise its relationship with residents.

“We’re just trying different events and we learn from each one of them,” she said.

“One of the things we’ll look at . . . is the genre of music.”

Out on the Weekend and The Blurst of Times have the same event manager, who declined to comment.
