An elderly Maribyrnong couple is devastated after a concrete stork that resided in their front yard for 60 years was stolen.
Slim and Beverley Shearer noticed the stork was missing after they returned to their Yarraville home after a day out on December 31.
The 120-centimetre decorative stork had been in their yard since they bought the property and had become a part of their home, Mrs Shearer said.
“This has been our first and only home. We purchased it in 1955, and the stork has been there ever since. We feel as though we’ve lost a part of our family.”
The couple’s granddaughter, Meg Shearer, feels the loss, too.
“For something to have been untouched, unmoved for over 50 years and just taken without a thought spared for how the owners feel is such a disappointment,” she said. “To think people can walk on to your property and take things as they please … is a message to everyone not to have sentimental or valuable items in your front yard.”
