Footscray: Welcome to new Saigon as East meets West

The 2015 East meets West Lunar Festival comes to Footscray on Sunday, February 8, welcoming Chinese New Year 2015 – the year of the goat.

Now in its 24th year, the festival will feature multicultural performances, including lion dancing and Chinese opera, food stalls and fireworks.

Footscray Asian Business Association president Wing La said this year’s event was an opportunity to give thanks for a great year.

“It’s a chance on behalf of the traders of Footscray to say thank you to the shoppers for the past year, and for us to thank the community to welcome the coming again of a new year,” Mr La said.

“We would like to promote the Footscray CBD with multicultural performances on stage, including Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese, Indonesian and Philippine.”

This year’s festival will celebrate Saigon, Mr La said.

“Saigon was the name of the capital of South Vietnam before 1975,” he said.

“The Maribyrnong council is in the process of approving a project to build a welcome arch, likely to be named Saigon.”

The festival is expected to draw about 60,000 people.

Hopkins, Lee and Byron streets and part of Mikelson street will be closed off for the festival.
