Footscray people everywhere join in the Australia-wide pride at the arrival of the Duke of Gloucester who will become the first royal Governer-General of the Commonwealth.

Appropriately, he landed here on Australia Day (last Monday).

With him are the Duchess of Gloucester and their two sons, Prince William and Prince Richard.

Altona North’s proposed swimming pool complex is now likely to become a reality following the announcement this week of a $125,000 grant towards the project.

Chairman of the swimming pool advisory committee Cr Les Crofts said it was likely that an early start would be made on the complex.

The grant was announced by the

federal government as part of a $1million grant for improvement of recreation facilities.

Williamstown Emergency Relief Committee is working hand-in-hand with the Salvation Army seeing to the social needs of Darwin refugees at Wiltona Hostel, North Williamstown.

The Salvation Army was appointed by the Victorian Social Services department to head the committee overseeing the care and support of the refugees when it was decided to reopen at Wiltona – closed for two years – for Darwin evacuees.

Lawyers, social welfare groups and Footscray council are to join forces and campaign for Footscray court to be re-opened.

The court shut up shop on Friday as part of the state government’s master plan to streamline the legal system.

But its closure will put immense pressure on the region’s already overworked welfare groups – and place further hardships on local people who make use of court facilities.
