It has been hailed as the birth of heavy metal – the 1970 release of Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album.
Exactly 45 years later, Yarraville will host a Friday 13 celebration to honour a band that changed the world.
The Black Sabbath 45th anniversary show will feature a one-off collaboration of some of Melbourne’s most respected heavy rock exponents, forming super group The Wizards.
In place of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward there will be Matt Chapman, Jake Haugis, Neil Wilkinson, Daniel Firth, Jim Coelli and Liam Cuffley, along with some surprise guests.
Expect rock classics – think
Behind the Wall of Sleep, Evil Woman, Sleeping Village – as The Wizards play the Black Sabbath album in its entirety before backing an encore set of Black Sabbath favourites.
Event organiser James Young says Black Sabbath remains the most important heavy metal band of all time. “Once they adopted the Black Sabbath name and incorporated horror-inspired lyrics and occult themes, coupled with those legendary, tuned-down guitars, they defined an entirely new genre in rock.”
The Black Sabbath tribute show is at The Yarraville Club, 135 Stephen Street, Yarraville, from 7pm, Friday, February 13. Tickets can be bought via www.yarravillelive.com or at the door if available.
