Sports of all stripes were on show on Saturday in a Midsumma Festival bid
to tackle homophobia in the sporting domain.
St Kilda Football Club players Leigh Montagna and Spencer White joined the 2015 Team Melbourne Sports Festival at Footscray Park to help gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) individuals try their hand at 14 different sports.
Team Melbourne’s Sebastian Delfino said the Saints helped Team Melbourne’s newly formed AFL 9s team run a session supporting the event’s mission of equality in sport regardless of sexuality.
“It’s great to have an organisation like the St Kilda Football Club coming along to support the day,” he said.
The session was designed to give people a flavour of what Melbourne’s GLBTIQ sports clubs have to offer.
The Western Foxes Gridiron club hosted a “give it a go” session and Basketball Victoria and Netball Victoria ran sessions for people interested in setting up teams.
