Fire scare for boarders
A Williamstown boarding house was evacuated after a fire started in one of its rooms on Saturday night. Firefighters were called to the Nelson Place house about 10.45pm when they found smoke in the building and occupants trying to get out. The fire was contained to the room where it started and there was no structural damage. Residents were relocated for the night due to water damage from sprinklers entering the electrical system.
Tractor sparks blaze
A man suffered significant burns after a tractor sparked a grassfire behind the old Bunnings store in Altona North on Thursday. The fire started about 3pm at the rear and side of the Millers Road building. Fifteen firefighters battled the blaze, which took 10 minutes to bring under control. A man in his 30s was treated for burns and taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.
Burger excuse for speeding
A man was caught travelling 86km/h over the speed limit at Laverton on Friday because he was hurrying to buy a burger. Highway patrol officers spotted the 28-year-old Tarneit man’s Proton hatch travelling 186km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Princes Freeway about 2.15am. Police spokeswoman Belle Nolan said the man’s excuse was that he was hurrying to get his hands on a burger. His car was impounded for 30 days and the driver was charged with a number of speeding offences and for driving while suspended.
