Brooklyn death probe

Police are trying to establish the circumstances that led to the death of a man on Geelong Road, Brooklyn, about 1.45am on Tuesday. It’s believed that an unidentified man was crossing from the south side of Geelong Road when he was hit by a west-bound truck. He died at the scene.

River victim’s name released

Police have released the name of a man whose remains were found in the Maribyrnong River as Brendan David Bernard, 32, of North Melbourne. He was known to police but investigators have not been able to establish a motive for his death and gruesome dismemberment. His last known movements were in Melbourne’s CBD on January 27. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Childcare options assessed

Hobsons Bay council last week adopted its revised childcare policy, but it remains unknown if the council-run Altona North and Altona Meadows centres will be outsourced. A report outlining the council’s options will be considered at the March 10 council meeting.

Pollution under discussion

Maribyrnong Truck Action Group secretary Martin Wurt will join Professor Tim Flannery at a public event at Federation Square from 6.30-7.30pm next Tuesday. Don’t Hold Your Breath will discuss air pollution in Australia. Register at www.envirojustice.org.au.
